E. C. G. Sudarshan (1931–2018) was an Indian-American theoretical physicist who contributed extensively to quantum physics. He is well-known for the discovery of the P representation in quantum optics, quantum Zeno effect, spin–statistics theorem, positive maps of density matrices, open quantum system and Lindblad equation. The present volume of Quanta celebrates the 60th anniversary of the remarkable paper by Sudarshan, Mathews and Rau, entitled "Stochastic dynamics of quantum mechanical systems", Phys. Rev. 121, 920 (1961), which revealed the most general dynamical equation of open quantum systems.
